Women’s Running Shoes by Type

Daily Trainers

For everyday training miles, you want a shoe that balances cushioning, durability and versatility. The HOKA Clifton 10 and Brooks Ghost 17 are two of the most popular daily trainers available – both offer a smooth, cushioned ride that handles everything from easy recovery runs to tempo efforts. For maximum cushioning, the HOKA Bondi 9 and Brooks Glycerin 23 are excellent choices.

Stability Running Shoes

If you overpronate – where your foot rolls inward as it lands – a stability shoe will help guide your stride and reduce stress on your knees and hips. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 is one of the most popular stability shoes available, using GuideRails technology to gently support your stride without feeling restrictive. The HOKA Arahi 8 is another excellent option for runners who want stability with a lighter feel. Not sure if you overpronate? A gait analysis will tell you in minutes.

Lightweight Speed Shoes

For tempo runs, intervals and race day, a lighter and more responsive shoe makes a real difference. The HOKA Mach 7 and Brooks Hyperion Max 3 are both excellent super-trainers – faster than a daily trainer but more durable than a race shoe for regular use. For race day, the Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 features a full-length carbon fibre plate for maximum propulsion.

Trail Running Shoes

For off-road running – whether forest paths, technical mountain terrain or muddy trails – you need a shoe with a grippy outsole and protective midsole. The HOKA Speedgoat 7 is our most popular trail shoe, with a Vibram Megagrip outsole that handles wet and technical terrain with confidence. We also stock trail options from Salomon, Asics and Altra for runners with specific preferences.

Wide Fit Running Shoes

If you have wider feet, several of our most popular models are available in wide fit (2E). The Brooks Ghost 17 Wide and Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 Wide are both available in 2E width. HOKA shoes also tend to run slightly wider than average and are worth trying if standard width shoes feel too narrow. Read our full guide to running shoes for wide feet.

How to Choose Women’s Running Shoes

Choosing the right running shoe comes down to four main factors:

Your gait and foot type

How your foot strikes the ground and how much it rolls inward (pronates) determines whether you need a neutral or stability shoe. A gait analysis takes the guesswork out of this completely.

Your terrain

Road running needs a smooth, cushioned outsole. Trail running needs grip and protection. If you run both, it’s worth having a shoe for each.

Your mileage and pace

Higher mileage runners benefit from more cushioning. Faster runners often prefer a lighter, more responsive shoe. If you do both, a daily trainer plus a speed shoe is a great combination.

Your foot width

Many runners don’t realise they need a wider fit until they try one. If you’ve had blisters or discomfort across the forefoot, a wide fit shoe could make a significant difference.

The Brooks Ghost 17 and HOKA Clifton 10 are both excellent choices for beginner runners – they’re cushioned, versatile and forgiving enough to support your legs as they adapt to running. If you overpronate, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 adds stability support without feeling restrictive.

For marathon training and long runs, a cushioned shoe that protects your legs over high mileage is ideal. The HOKA Bondi 9, Brooks Glycerin 23 and Asics Gel-Nimbus 28 are all excellent long-distance options.

Not essential, but highly recommended – especially if you’ve had knee, hip or foot issues, or if you’re new to running. A gait analysis takes around 30 minutes and removes all the guesswork from choosing a shoe. Visit us in-store at Running Bath and we’ll assess your gait and recommend the right options for you.

Most running shoes last between 400 and 600 miles depending on your weight, running style and the surfaces you run on. If you’re running 30 miles a week, that’s roughly every 3-4 months. Signs it’s time to replace: loss of cushioning underfoot, increased soreness after runs, or visible wear on the outsole.
